About Freemasonry
Freemasonry is one of the world’s oldest social and charitable organisations. In South Africa, it brings together men from all walks of life who are united by shared values and a desire to improve themselves and their communities.
Guided by the principles of Integrity, Friendship, Respect, and Service, Freemasons work to become better individuals while making a positive impact on society. Our members contribute to charitable causes, foster lifelong friendships, and promote understanding across diverse backgrounds.

Our values
Freemasonry is built upon four guiding principles that shape who we are and what we do. They provide a foundation for our conduct, our fellowship, and our service to others.
Integrity
Honesty, trustworthiness, reliability, and conscientiousness form the core of a virtuous character. Freemasons strive to live with integrity in all aspects of life.
Friendship
Freemasonry creates opportunities to build lasting friendships. It offers a bond of fellowship and belonging, promoting enjoyment and fulfilment.
Respect
From its earliest days, Freemasonry has valued diversity and inclusivity. It encourages tolerance, understanding, and respect for the beliefs of others.
Service
At the heart of Freemasonry is service—whether through charitable giving, volunteering, or supporting community causes. Freemasons contribute time, skills, and resources to help others.
Our history
Orphic Lodge No. 5949 was consecrated on 17 April 1944 at the Johannesburg Freemasons’ Hall. It was founded by brethren who wished to create a Lodge that embraced both English and Greek traditions, with a strong focus on learning, research, and discussion. Among its early members were distinguished leaders of the District and visiting dignitaries from Greece.
From the beginning, the Lodge was known for its energy and growth, holding frequent meetings and lectures, and quickly building a vibrant membership. Over the decades, Orphic Lodge has remained true to its character: a place where fellowship, education, and service come together, and where brethren from many backgrounds contribute to the life of the Craft.
